William was born in Derby, on the 21st February, 1876. He enlisted in Montreal, Quebec, 15th March 1915, stating his occupation as a mechanical engineer, and his next of kin as Edith Mary Mugliston, of 191, Westminster Road, Morecambe, Lancashire. He had previously served as a cadet with the Sherwood Foresters.
He was five feet ten inches in height, had a medium complexion, grey eyes and brown hair, and belonged to the Church of England. He had a vaccination mark on his left arm.
